A favorite extracurricular activity for kids is a kid's science experiments activity with amazing results. Today, Alpha Science Classroom unveils the scientific mystery of iron for kids with Steel Wool and Vinegar Reaction, an amazingly effective children's chemistry experiments activity that is perfect for learning about chemical reactions.

Alpha science classroom:Steel Wool and Vinegar Reaction, What You Need

  • Thermometer

  • Jar with lid

  • Steel wool

  • Vinegar

Alpha science classroom:Steel Wool and Vinegar Reaction, experimental steps

Step 1: First, the children placed the thermometer in the jar and put the lid on.

Step 2: The children wait for the thermometer to register the temperature for about 5 minutes, then open the lid and read the thermometer.

Step 3: Children carefully remove the thermometer from the jar (if you did not do so in Step 1).

Step 4: Children soak a piece of steel wool ball in the vinegar for 1 minute to squeeze out the excess vinegar from the steel wool.

Step 5: Children wrap the steel wool around the thermometer and place the steel wool/thermometer in the jar with the lid on.

Step 6: Children wait 5 minutes and then read the temperature and compare it to the first reading.

Alpha Science Classroom: Steel Wool and Vinegar Reaction, scientific principles

Steel wool contains iron. When iron is exposed to oxygen, it forms rust. Rust is the product of a chemical reaction between iron and oxygen.

Steel wool has a protective layer that prevents oxygen from reaching the iron. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which removes this coating. When the protective layer is removed, oxygen in the atmosphere can come into contact with the iron in the steel wool and a chemical reaction called oxidation takes place. Rust is then created.

This reaction is also an exothermic reaction. It produces heat energy. You should be able to read the increase in temperature on the thermometer. You may also notice condensation on the side of the beaker. This is caused by the increase in temperature inside the beaker.

I believe that this simple kitchen science experiment brings the most amazing effect to the children. The children learn simple chemistry knowledge and fun through this kid's science experiment activity, which is the charm of children's chemistry experiments activity and the most beautiful picture presented by alpha science classroom for the children. What are you waiting for, let's explore the amazing world of science together!

alpha science toys have prepared many amazing and interesting children's chemistry experiment kits for kids to reveal more interesting chemical reactions and help kids learn and grow to become the greatest scientists!
