In winter, snow and ice bring a different kind of beauty. Children can't resist the charm of snow and ice, and they can also learn about the mysteries of nature through snow and ice-related science experiment activities. Today, Alpha Science Classroom is conducting a science experiment on snow and ice melting with the children. Through this fun chemistry experiment for kids, children can unlock the mysteries of nature contained in snow and ice, and at the same time, children can learn about chemistry and enjoy the help and fun brought by kid's science experiments.

  • Water

  • Salt

  • Food coloring (or watercolors or tempera paints)

Alpha Science Classroom: Melting Ice Science Experiment, Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: First, children will need to make their own ice cubes. Children can use ice cubes for this project, but it is best to have larger ice cubes for the experiment. Freeze water in a shallow plastic container, such as a disposable storage container for sandwiches or leftovers. Fill the container only partially to make relatively thin ice cubes. Salt can melt all the holes in the thin ice cubes, creating interesting ice tunnels.

Step 2: Children keep the finished ice cubes in the freezer until you are ready to experiment, then remove the ice cubes and place them on a cookie sheet or in a shallow pan. If the ice cubes are not easy to get out, you can easily remove them from the container by running warm water around the bottom of the pan. Place the ice cubes in a large pot or on a cookie sheet. The ice will melt, so this will keep the project stable.

Step 3: The children sprinkle salt on the ice cubes or make small mounds of salt on the ice cubes. Perform a chemical experiment of ice fusion.

Step 4: Children can also dab different coloring on the surface of the ice cubes. The colorant will not color the ice, but it follows the melting pattern. You can see the channels, holes, and tunnels in the ice and it looks beautiful, while still being able to visibly observe the ice fusing

You can add more salt and colorant or none at all. Explore however you want.

Alpha Science Classroom: Science Principles of Melting Ice Science Experiment

Alpha Science Classroom Tell the kids with this kids chemistry experiment that salt lowers the freezing point of water through a process called freezing point depression. The ice begins to melt, forming liquid water. Salt dissolves in water, adding ions, raising the temperature at which the water can refreeze. When the ice melts, energy is extracted from the water, making it colder. For this reason, ice cream makers use salt. It keeps the ice cream cold enough to freeze. Did you notice that water is colder than ice? Ice exposed to saltwater melts faster than other ices, thus creating holes and channels.

We hope that the chemistry experiment for kids in Alpha Science Classroom can help children learn more about the wonders of nature, learn different knowledge through interesting kid's science experiments, help children create their own ice world with scientific methods, and become the most powerful science wizard.

Alpha Science Toys also prepares many interesting children's chemistry experiment kits for children, which help children learn scientific knowledge while unraveling the mysteries of science, growing up in laughter, and realizing the scientific dreams of every child.
