• A pencil

• A ruler

• A sheet of thin card (16 cm x 4 cm)

• One sheet of hard card (24 cm x 30 cm)

• A piece of hair, about 25 cm long

• One wooden board (24 cm x 4 cm x 4 cm)

• Six pins

Alpha science classroom: Make Your Own Hygrometer, steps to make.

Step 1: With the help of a ruler, children draw an arrow about 13 cm x 2 cm on a thin card.

Step 2: Children cut the arrow out of the thin card and then use pins to secure the hard card along the long end of the wooden block.

Step 3: Children use sticky tape to attach one end of the hair wire to the top of the hard card, and the other end of the hair wire should be attached to the back of the arrow.

Step 4: Children place this arrow on the hard card and stretch it completely. Refer to the picture to get an idea of what this looks like.

Step 5: Children attach one end of the arrow to the hard card with a pushpin.

Step 6: Also as a final step, children place this homemade hygrometer on the outside. It's time to start taking readings! Be extra careful to make sure your hygrometer doesn't tip over. When the sun is shining, mark on the card where the arrow is pointing. Next to this mark, write "dry". You will notice that when the climate is wetter, the arrow will point lower. In this case, write "humid" next to the marker. This way you can note down the different weather conditions.
