• Different color leaves

• Bowl or pot

• Rubbing alcohol

• Test tubes

• Tongs

Alpha science classroom：Leaf Color Experiment Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

First, children put four leaves into a pot of boiling water. Boil the leaves for 5 minutes. Make sure that an adult supervises this step!

Step 2

While children wait for the leaves to boil, fill the test tube with rubbing alcohol (or a goblet is fine). Children need enough rubbing alcohol to soak the leaves.

Step 3

After the children waited for the leaves to boil for 5 minutes, they picked up the leaves with tongs and quickly put them in rubbing alcohol.

Children pay attention to the current color of rubbing alcohol. Now wait about an hour and observe what happens to the leaves and alcohol. What do you see? Let your Leaf Color Experiment sit overnight, and then come back to see if your alcohol color has darkened. Can you guess what color these leaves are?
