Children's science experiments with color changes are always exciting and appealing to children. Different color changes bring brand-new sensory experiences for children. Today, Alpha Science Classroom teaches kids to make a DIY Color Changing Sensory Bottle, it will be a fun chemistry experiment for kids that teaches them the properties of color-changing materials. Kids can identify what the temperature is by the color of the bottle, and they will understand the relationship between temperature and pressure changes!
Alpha science classroom: DIY Color Changing Sensory Bottle Materials needed:
A somewhat flexible empty plastic bottle with a lid (a 2-liter soda bottle or a 16.9 oz disposable water bottle is perfect)
Thermochromic powder (There are many colors to choose from on Amazon)
Ice water
Hot water
Alpha science classroom: DIY Color Changing Sensory Bottle steps
Step 1: First, the children fill the plastic bottle with about half of the water, and then use the funnel to add about 1 teaspoon of thermochromic dye.
Step 2: The children put the lid on the bottle and shake it well. Now we notice that it is a faint pink.
Step 3: The packaging states that the thermochromic pigment will change color at 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius). We want to know what happens if we cool the bottle above this temperature.
Step 4: Children need to put a logo on the bottle so that no one will mistake our scientific experiment for a delicious fruit punch. Then we put the bottle in the refrigerator.
Step 5: What can you find? In less than an hour, the bottle will undergo tremendous changes! Not only the color inside turn dark red, but the bottle itself also seems to be squeezed. There are dents where the bottle collapse.
Step 6: We take the bottle out of the refrigerator and put it on the counter. Sure enough, as the temperature increase, the color inside fade, and the bottle return to normal again! The children are so surprised!
Step 7: The relationship between temperature and pressure. We decide that we want to see changes happen faster. we heat some water on the stove, and then we fill another large bowl with ice water. We have a wonderful time, heating the bottle in a bowl of hot water, watching it turn pale pink, and then cooling in an ice water bath, watching it turn deep red and collapse. It's like magic every time!
Alpha science classroom tip: When the bottle is heated in hot water, be sure to remove the lid. An increase in temperature will increase the pressure in the bottle, if it is too high, it may burst the bottle!
Finally, the children can leave the heat-sensitive official bottle on the kitchen counter in the past few weeks. Since the color changes around room temperature, it is interesting to see how warm our kitchen is by looking at the color of the sensory bottle!
After a few days, thermochromic pigments tend to settle on the bottom of the bottle. Just shake it gently to remix it.
Alpha science classroom: The science behind the DIY Color Changing Sensory Bottle experiment
Alpha science classroom tells the children that thermochromic pigments change color according to temperature because they are made of leuco dyes. Heating causes the leuco dye to change its molecular structure. One form reflects colored light, while the other form is colorless. The alpha science classroom wants to tell children that another interesting thing in this color-changing kid's science experiment is how pressure changes with temperature. The pressure is proportional to the temperature, that is, as the temperature rises, the pressure also rises. When the temperature decreases, the pressure also decreases.
When the bottle cools, the internal pressure will decrease. This means that there is more pressure on the outside of the bottle and push the bottle in.
For the same reason, when the temperature rises, the pressure inside the bottle also rises. As the thermochromic dye becomes hot and white, the bottle will expand!
DIY Color Changing Sensory Bottle is the magic of science. Do kids get to know the science behind this fun chemistry experiment for kids? Alpha Science Classroom also has fun kid's science experiments that help kids learn more about chemistry and physics with fun experiments to help them become the best scientists.
