Water is very important to humans, water is a liquid that also has a variety of magical mysteries, do children know? Today, the alpha science classroom is exploring the surface tension of water with children to unlock the scientific mysteries of water through this simple physical science experiment for children. Also, explore the treasures of nature through kid's science experiments activities.

Alpha Science Classroom: Exploring the surface tension of water, ingredients needed

  • Water

  • Cooking oil (We used canola oil.)

  • Alcohol for wiping (optional)

  • Container to hold the liquid (We used a 4 oz. ball jar.)

  • Eye drops

  • Toothpicks

  • Detergent

  • Wax paper

Alpha Science Classroom: Exploring the Surface Tension of Water, Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: First, the children use a dropper to place a few drops of water on some wax paper. Look closely at these drops of water. What do you notice?

Step 2: Children use another dropper to place a few drops of cooking oil near the drops of water. Compare the cooking oil and the water. How are they alike? How are they different?

Step 3: Children look closely at other liquids, such as rubbing alcohol on wax paper. Compare and contrast all liquids.

Step 4: Children try to poke a drop of water with a clean toothpick. What happens?

Step 5: Children now poke a drop of water with a toothpick dipped in detergent. What will happen? Why do you think this happens?

Step 6: After the children have completed the previous steps, Lucy likes to try her own ideas. She tries to put oil on the drops of water and tries to mix them together. Then she tried poking different drops of water with a clean soapy toothpick. She was so curious!

Alpha Science Classroom: Exploring Surface Tension in Water, Scientific Principles

The alpha science classroom tells children that a drop of water on wax paper looks a bit like it has skin around it. When you poke it with a clean toothpick, nothing happens, but when you poke it with a toothpick that has soap on it, the water breaks apart.

The water droplets stick to each other. This is why the surface of the water droplet appears to have a skin-like layer on it. This is called surface tension. The soap lowers the surface tension of the water, causing it to break apart.

Water also contains many scientific mysteries, this children's physical science experiments, just for children to unlock a little bit of the treasure, there is still a lot of water we want to unlock knowledge, children can pay attention to more, alpha science classroom kid's science experiments activities, explore more water magic code.

alpha science toys have prepared many physical science experiment kits for children so that they can solve the mysteries of science in a fun way and grow up to be the most powerful scientists.
