• Two plastic funnels

• Rubber tubing to fit the funnels

• One balloon

• A friend in a pool

• Adult supervision

Alpha Science Classroom: DIY Underwater Telephone Making Steps

Step 1: The Kids need to fir both ends of the rubber tube with the funnels.

Step 2: Let kids stretch the balloons over the end of one of the funnels, making sure that it is right across the opening of the funnel.

Step 3: The kids need to place the funnel with a balloon into the pool.

Step 4: Let your kids place the other funnel over their ears. Did the kids hear sounds from inside the pool? Have a friend talk to you from under the water. Can you hear them clearly?

Liquid molecules are packed more tightly than a gas molecules. This means that the vibrations travel faster through liquids than they do through the air (and with less energy loss).
